School Board dropping the nuke

well, that's what the Super said/wanted ... seems like he said this a few months ago ... if we don't have a plan by (I forget the date), 3 schools will be closed after this year, because we can't afford to keep them open.

Sucks for the kids that are juniors. Normally, the SB should pay for extra expenses, like new class rings, lettermen jackets, etc. But the parents brought this upon themselves, so don't expect the SB to help any.

I REALLY feel for you guys.

Last I heard about a month ago, Grundy fb was still short a game or 2. Maybe we can pick up somebody that has a new open date.

If thats the case, Kelly, PV, or Coeburn all would be great opportunities for the Wave since they will be competeing for the same playoff spots.

None- Basham wanted to drop 54 mil on 3 old buildings. His "wishes" would have never been funded, and what got him lynched was the "need" to cut a million off the budget by closing Appy and putting them and PV's kids into mobile classrooms. What what was in the best interest of the county was NOT to let a man that had 54 million in Jan of one year , and by August, had made such a mess of things he needed to close one school and save 1 million, have his way. I know I'm not the smartest, but in less than 6 mos, that board LOST 55 million somewhere.

Personally i think this is karma for all the anti consolidation people in the county. Basically the SB said consolidation will occur... we do not have the money to keep 6 high school open for an extended period of time. And they kept fighting for their school, probably for pride sake not for the reasons they were whining about. Now they have basically lost their school and will go to JJ Kelly, PV, and Coeburn. I really dont see the SB voting against this either. Something must be done prior to next school year.

So you are in favor of dumping 50-60 million in the 3 old buildings?

I believe this is will lead to three new buildings as they originally wanted.

Nope not at all! I have said all along 3 schools on three sites is the best way to go. Anti's argued about everything under the sun to oppose this that when they dropped the 2-1 they went crazy ( as with most of the county).

Bottom line something must be done. Simply prolonging this situation even further is not beneficial for anyone. Having 6 schools in Wise Co. is not a feasible idea anymore. If the anti's would have been more cooperative we would have a school somewhere on indian creek for Wise/Pound, somewhere ont he 4 lane between Coeburn and St. Paul, and a school in BSG for BSG/Appy. But since nothing was good enough for them they now are probably stuck with this alternative.

But look at it like this. with that kind of money they CAN make those old schools pretty nice. with a bit of money and upkeep I don't see why these schools can't be pretty nice. sure it will take work but look at some old buildings that have had money put into them and they turned out nice. I know they are in need of renovation but I find it hard to believe that these schools can't be made into nice schools. now mind you that I still believe the best plan was for 3 new schools but if this is the next alternative I think it is a project with taking serious. "can't never could do anything" i think was the slogan, so unless the schools are just falling in and the foundation's are prety much gone why, with that amount of money, can't these be renovated into nice buildings? my house is 80 years old and it is still a very solid house. look at the houses around Big Stone that are 90 and 100 years old that are nice houses.

I can pick up trash around a dump, it's still a dump and I'll have to do it again. The problem is that these buildings were never designed to last this long, the new schools today aren't either. Renovating only leads to more renovating, you don't have that problem with new schools, not for at least many, many years...we'll be doing this same thing in 10 years when we can have state of the art schools for the same amount of money.

The only thing I like about this is there will be 3 schools instead of 6, but it's really garbage in every other way.
